Garden Bloggers Bloom Day May 2024

A few days of sunshine have done wonders for the garden, I even sat out. All sorts of lovely things are showing off their colours and giving me delight. Besides the campion and forget-me-knots that have taken over several pots here are the other things that are enjoying the spring. Those purple ones above, I can't remember what they are called, but they self-seed quite readily and I am not sure where from because I don't recall buying it.

Below is the ivy-leaved toadflax, another wild thing that pops up all over but that is my favourite, it gets into all the nooks and crannies around the streets too.

Sweet William, that survived the winter and had suddenly come into flower when I went outside to take some photos (it is raining again today):

This is the dogwood, that is now a huge shrub, easily ten feet tall, the biggest thing in the garden. There was one single patch of flowers last year, but it is covered this year with buds on the verge of opening:

The dog rose, which is lovely but the flowers are so flimsy and they last only a few days before the wind or rain knocks all the petal off:

The brunnera that is hiding under the ivy puts out these lovely pale blue flowers, a tine delight by the back door:

And the ajuga has also survived the winter (and last year being swamped by the triffids so I don't know if they did much), it's another lovely one that hides in the shade just quietly doing it's own thing.

Blooms for Bloom Day

There is so much going on in the garden it is hard to keep up. Things are thriving despite the heatwave. The violas (above) continue to delight and flower continually. These were a few scrubby plants that overwintered under the bench and now are earning their spot in the sunshine.

Below some verbena, in with the fennel and rather crowded out, but managing to make itself seen:

The scabious have been popping up all over the garden, self seeding like mad after having a few last year:

This salvia is flowering, though the other one behind is biding it's time:

The oxalis that colonises the side bed is recovering from yet another bout of the rust mould that means I chop it right back. It hasn't as much room as previous years but is a huge favourite with the bees:

Orange marigolds grown from seed this year. The plants are still quite small but they are beginning to flower:

The triffids by the back door are still producing copious amounts of blooms though the flowers on the really tall stems have pretty much finished. It's been fun but I think my space is too small to accommodate this giant so I will not be sorry to see them die back.

Campanula is another that I planted for the first time last year and have self seeded all over the place. They are a delight:

Garden Bloggers Bloom Day

 

During the A to Z Challenge I came across the Garden Bloggers Bloom Day, a monthly sharing of your favourite new flowers. I have always considered myself a book blogger rather than a garden blogger, though in the last year or two the balance has tipped in that direction. So here are a few things looking pretty in my yard at the moment. Sorry I can't tell you what they all are because I tend to let things pop up and often forget where things were planted.

These is my lovely wallflowers that have been delightful for a couple of years now:

And here the Triffids are finally flowering and it seems that they are giant foxgloves after all. I have nurtured these plants for three years ... it's nice to know the care and attention will pay off in the end, even though they are taking over the space be the back door, two of them are six feet tall.
