B is for Borrow

The doorbell rang and moments later she clattered down the stairs and departed in a flurry of excitement. A faint cloud of perfume lingered in the hall making the cat sneeze. The bedside light illuminated the disarray of Friday night preparations; clothes scattered, tried on and discarded in disgust, laddered tights balled up and tossed vaguely in the direction of the bin. A half drunk cup of tea cooled on the dressing table. The red nail varnish lay on its side, a thin thread of the viscous liquid trickled out to pool on the carpet. Maggie bent and picked it up. She considered trying to wipe up the spill but it had formed a perfect heart shape blob and it made her smile instead. Screwing the lid on tight she carried it back to her own room and replaced it carefully between the pink and the purple.

(Picture utterly irrelevant to the story, but a slightly more political take on the word 'borrow'.)

  1. Nice short for the word and prompt 'Borrow'. Liked the heart shaped spill for a smile instead of a worry about the carpet. Picture utterly relevant to the earth! Visiting from the AtoZ List.

  5. I was distracted by the need to want to go in and tidy Maggie's room, but loved her personality shining through @startmyquest (sorry for the previous typo)
